Insight is a web-based business process management system developed for HPA. A bespoke suite of applications manages all aspects of the commercial pipeline, from enquiry processing and bidding for work through to contract negotiation and onward to service delivery. A graphical reporting system summarises key business metrics. The system also manages training course bookings and software purchases. A strong focus on the user experience from the outset has meant that Insight is simple to use with very little staff training required.

As the UK's primary authority on radiation protection, the HPA's Radiation Protection Division (RPD) represents a very significant resource for employers and others. This ongoing project involves the development of a series of related radiation services websites incorporating online training course booking, private customer specific areas and online software purchasing.

The ResourceSpace user base continues to grow with successful solutions implemented for ActionAid, Beazer Homes, Ealing Council, the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation and several other large organisations.


IPEC Client: IPEC
Project: Power Equipment Monitoring Application
2007 and ongoing

IPEC provides monitoring and control solutions for the power industry. The web application developed enables online realtime monitoring of power equipment using AJAX to provide a responsive and user friendly experience. The application integrates with Google Maps to show an at-a-glance geographical status view of monitored substations.

A new website that can produce a radon level report for every household in England and Wales. The Muse CMS is used for all site content and administration. Reports can be purchased online via integration with the SecureTrading payment system. The site is available in both English and Welsh.

Project: Castaway 2007
December 2006 to March 2007

In early 2007 the Castaway returned for a second run some seven years after the original television series. The project involved the full HTML/CSS build for the Castaway website and the creation of a custom content management system, based on Muse, to allow instant site updates from the broadcasting location in New Zealand. The CMS published HTML and configuration files into BBC's proprietry 'Barley' web framework. All images were automatically resized and prepared from the uploaded frames taken directly from the source high definition footage.


Big Lottery Fund Client: AEA Technology / Big Lottery Fund
Project: Grant Application System
2007

The Big Lottery Fund allocates over half of the good cause money collected by the Lottery Fund. The application developed manages the grant application workflow from beginning to end; from the forms entry by the requesting party through to the validation and final review and decision by the Lottery Fund Committee. The entire process is paperless. The applicant can log in to the system and see the status of their grant application at any point, and in real time.

Project: Oxjam - UK Wide Music Festival

Oxjam is an ambitious UK wide music event organised by Oxfam, incorporating hundreds of local gigs and concerts. The website connects event organisers with members of the public. Organisers can register events, upload photographs and descriptions and download "event kits" via tha Backstage area. Members of the public can search for events by postcode, region, genre and event type. The website is content managed and Oxfam staff can change site text and upload event reports, news and stories and can promote specific events. The complete system was built in less than 3 weeks.

Project: Words & Pictures

The Words & Pictures application was built from the ground up to manage all of Oxfam's photo, story and video resources used for marketing and in publications (numbering 20,000 and climbing daily). Features include: optimised indexing, an extensive resource categorisation system, user collaboration, automatic photo resizing to targeted formats, and live statistics / monitoring. This system has now been released as open source under the name ResourceSpace.


SAFED Client: AEA Technology / DriveTech / Department for Transport
Project: Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) - Training Management
January 2006 - Ongoing

SAFED is a government sponsored programme which intends to improve the safe and fuel efficient driving skills of commercial drivers. The Training Management application allows driving trainers to remotely log driver details and results directly into the system. Several reports can then be produced automatically based on this live data which are used to gauge the effectiveness of the programme. The system utilises the Muse product for all site content management and for the form design tools.

Consultancy and development assistance in moving the current Oxfam UK website to an open source Content Management System (Zope/Plone). Custom templates and stylesheets were created to closely match the existing flat HTML website. In addition, bespoke applications including contacts management and project reporting are being created for the Oxfam corporate intranet.

Project: Certification Mark Licence Application System
January to April 2006 The digital switchover certification mark is used by manufacturers and retailers, and certifies products and services that are designed to work through the digital television switchover. The system manages the complete license application process with interfaces built for both the end user and internal administration staff. The system utilises the Muse product to ensure online application forms are completed correctly prior to processing.


JobCentre Plus Client: JobCentre Plus / AEA Technology
Project: Learning Provider Accreditation
July to September 2005

The application manages the accreditation process required for all new JobCenter Plus learning providers. A workflow system ensures the correct processing takes place. Functionality includes a generic "Form Builder" tool to allow the creation of the relevant online forms, and content management capability using Muse for all site content, user management and configuration. The application can be significantly altered by a non-technical person.



F1 Racing Client: F1 Racing Magazine

The new subscriber area developed for the F1 Racing Magazine website provides subscribers with an interactive area featuring F1 Racing news, a blog with user feedback, special subscriber-only offers and user polls. The Muse system is used for easy website administration.

The LAT archive is one of the largest motoring and motor sport picture collections in the world with over 9 million colour images and black and white negatives dating back to 1895. The project involved the creation of a new design and HTML templates to provide the optimum usabilty for the web front end. Our design ensures that the vast archives can be easily accessed using searches, thumnails and preview windows.

BPP is the qualifications trainer of choice to many of the world's leading professional service firms. In 2000 as Technical Manager at XKO's web division, Dan designed and managed the delivery of the Virtual Campus. This is an an e-learning solution, one of the first of it's type, that allows training to take place entirely online. This was built on the Varius platform he originally created. Later in 2003 Dan was part of the development team that implemented a complete course ordering system that integrated with a new back-end ERP system, also from XKO.


Dell Client: Dell Europe

1996 to 1997

Dan was part of the team responsible for designing and developing the 14 european sites for Dell; previously Dell had only the single US site. He worked on, among other things, the "configurator" that allows the user to build a custom Dell PC. Such was the success of the work that much of it was incorporated in to the US site.


WHSmith Client: W H Smith
Project: Portal; In-store Kiosk Software
August 1999 to March 2000

Dan added content management capability to the W H Smith main website, and developed "sticky" features such as games, and community features such as forums and chat rooms. The Java based real time quiz "Dr Know" became very popular indeed. He later developed kiosk software to allow book orders to be placed within W H Smith stores.

Dan worked on a number of projects for Microsoft in the UK, including an intranet for the UK team and a DHTML technology showcase for the then just-released Internet Explorer 3.0 browser.


Page & Moy Client: Page & Moy

2000 to 2002

A large independent travel agent, Page & Moy are well known for their F1 Motor Racing tours and worldwide cruises. In early 2000 they were looking for a Content Management System to allow easier management of their many sites, and were initially looking at the Vignette product but were put off by the high costs. Then working as Technical Manager for XKO, Dan suggested that himself and his team could develop a bespoke solution for them, and the Varius CMS was born. Dan then recruited an additional product development team and managed the development of the product. Varius has been hugely successful for XKO, as it now powers not only the Page & Moy sites but many other web solutions too.

Claris (now Filemaker) is a software company formed as a spin-off from Apple. For a considerable time, Dan managed the large Claris UK website as part of his Online Producer role at Domino Systems. In addition, when Claris renamed to FileMaker in 1997, Dan managed the transition to the new FileMaker brand.

The Jaguar Collection is an online store full of all manner of Jaguar branded accessories, originally based on Microsoft Merchant Server. As the lead developer, Dan's challenge was to port the solution to Microsoft Commerce Server. The site was one of the first Microsoft Commerce Server sites to launch in the UK.


SmithKline Beecham Client: SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline)

As Online Producer at Domino Systems, Dan developed a web based internal teaching aid for SmithKline Beecham. The software made use of client Javascript and could also be distributed on CD-ROM.


Bell and Howell Client: Bell and Howell

Bell and Howell are manufacturers of imaging equipment known for being long-time producers of microfiche equipment. This was a complete ground-up solution using Dan's own e-commerce code, which was later used as the base for several other large projects at Domino.
